We wanted to know which digitalization trends are emerging in German SMEs: In which areas are the most technologies used and which software applications are the most popular in Germany? Does the digitalization of SMEs really help to improve working conditions and would employees describe their workplace as a digitized company? So many questions that we want to answer with our study on the digitalization of SMEs in Germany.

Despite data security concerns, WhatsApp is the most used smartphone app in German SMEs.
Office, SAP, Adobe Cloud, Skype and Datev are the most used software applications in German SMEs.

Germany does not rely on the cloud
Almost all companies in Germany work with software: only 7% of employees say they do not use software. However, cloud software is still used relatively less frequently.

64% of Germans work with installed software or a mix of installed and cloud-based software. 24% of companies provide their employees with in-house software that is used either alone or in combination with other software programs. The proportion of companies that only work with cloud software is very small. German SMEs invest less in key cloud technologies than other European countries. As a result, they miss out on crucial competitive advantages. The results of the survey on the use of cloud services in SMEs by the Berlin School of Economics and Law and forcont business technology GmbH show that 88% of respondents cite data security concerns as a reason for reluctance to use cloud software.
