The benefit of greater freedom of travel is the third most popular benefit (41%). Due to its principle of multimodality, shared mobility can allow travellers to choose the mode of transport most suitable for each situation, allowing them to plan their journeys more flexibly.

Germans are concerned about data protection
Although the services offer numerous benefits to the consumers who use them, some disadvantages are also mentioned.

Disadvantages of shared mobility
The main concern of consumers relates to the retention of personal data (39%). Indeed, mobility services generate a large amount of data, including potentially sensitive data on the exact location of their users and their habits (how often they visit a particular place). In this sense, consumers are increasingly concerned about the processing of their personal data.

Another criticism expressed is the lack of quality (37%). Service providers are the guarantors of the quality of the mobility services offered. This includes, for example, that the apps on the user side work perfectly, that the vehicles are always easy to rent and unlock, that they are well maintained and, above all, that they are available where demand is high and mobility is needed. If the user encounters technical problems at these contact points, these factors can affect trust in the service.

The problem of lack of clarity in the event of a dispute is also a problem for users (29%). Many private sector collaborative mobility services rely on the provision of dedicated platforms whose sole role is to facilitate the connection of users. As already mentioned in the first part of our study , it can sometimes be difficult for individuals to know who to turn to in case of problems.

Many products and services rely on the data provided by customers to deliver satisfactory performance and optimal service. It is crucial for companies that collect this data to make it clear to customers that they can trust them to protect their data: this includes having a clear privacy policy and ensuring the security of customer data .
Can shared mobility compete with the use of individual transport?
Of all our respondents, 79% say they own a personal vehicle, while 21% say they do not. We asked vehicle owners whether they agree with the following statement: “The growing negative impacts of car ownership (heavy traffic, lack of parking, high fuel prices, etc.) have increased my interest in shared mobility services.”

30% agree (somewhat or completely) with this statement. Awareness of the economic impact and logistical constraints associated with traditional modes of transport seems to speak in favour of the principle of shared mobility for almost a third of consumers.

However, most vehicle owners are against it (48%) and 23% neither agree nor disagree. Owning your own vehicle is still very important to Germans. At the beginning of 2021, 77% of private households had at least one car. In addition to their vehicle, consumers use shared services such as e-scooters and bicycles. However, these do not replace owning your own vehicle.

We can see a positive assessment by the majority of respondents regarding the prospects for increasing use of shared mobility services and their positive impact on the environment.

Transitioning from ownership to a shared vehicle can not only help reduce costs in the consumer's daily life, but also have a positive impact on the amount of carbon emissions caused by the amount of private transportation.

As mobility evolves towards multimodality, the principle of shared mobility also represents an advantage for employers who want to support flexible and more responsible mobility solutions for their employees. Companies can use shared mobility as an opportunity within their sustainability strategy.
