Another macro trend is that many companies are just getting started with Kubernetes. And no matter where a company is in its cloud journey, most IT leaders expect to see more containerized applications in production, with Kubernetes being the most common choice for this.

“Gartner predicts that by 2022, more than 75% of global organizations will be using containerized applications in production, up from less than 30% in 2020,” said Brian Gracely, senior director of product strategy at Red Hat. This aligns with data from Red Hat’s 2021 State of Enterprise Open Source study , in which 72% of IT leaders said they expect container adoption to grow within their organizations. Nearly all of them (85%) also see Kubernetes as key to their cloud-native application strategy.

1. Kubernetes as a platform for... everything?

“In the early days, users often built their own on-premise Kubernetes platforms and deployed a more simplified set of applications,” says Gracely. “But as Kubernetes has stabilized, its usage models have become much more mature.”

For example, most early applications running on Kubernetes were stateless - but the once-true idea that Kubernetes doesn't handle state very well is no longer so true today.

“An ever-wider range of applications are running in containers, and we’re starting to see more organizations moving their mission-critical, stateful applications to Kubernetes. Databases, event-driven messaging systems, and mission-critical applications are expected to move to Kubernetes to take advantage of the scalability, security, and portability it provides for all applications,” says Gracely.
