Enterprises plan to deploy IoT solutions in private networks

Many organizations have chosen to use private segregated networks to deploy the Internet of Things because they provide an additional layer of security, ComputerWeekly reports .

More and more organizations implementing IoT solutions are considering or are already building private networks to protect against cybersecurity threats, according to a report from analytics firm Omdia, commissioned by mobile services provider Syniverse. The survey of customers in the financial services, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing, and retail sectors in North America and Europe found that most are considering IoT as part of a broader digital transformation strategy, but cited implementation challenges as a barrier. Of these, 50% cited data, network, and device security as the most pressing concerns. Another 50% said they had already moved IoT devices to a private network, with 97% either considering or already pursuing this option.

from the Internet to private networks to concerns that hackers could link devices into botnets and then turn them into a gateway for malware to enter a corporate network, leading to increased data theft or breaches.

“The growing number of enterprise IoT estonia mobile database is not without challenges, but experience, network reach, and technology expertise can play a significant role in overcoming them,” said Bill Hurley, chief marketing officer at Syniverse. “For example, private networking is a viable alternative to the public Internet and its inherent risks, but it is a technically challenging approach to implement. The research shows that while companies are looking to reap the economic and performance benefits, they also recognize that they cannot manage private network deployments on their own.”

Moreover, half of the organizations surveyed said they do not have the teams, processes, or policies required to address IoT cybersecurity. Concerns about IoT security tend to slow down the adoption of such solutions, with nearly 90% of respondents reporting that they have experienced delays or limitations. This is despite the fact that budgets allocated to IoT security represent a statistically significant share of overall project costs. More than 50% of respondents indicated that they spend more than 20% of their IoT budget on security.
