Fort Bourtange was built on marshy ground and is surrounded by several water-filled ditches. The star-shaped fort reflects the popular idea of the time that such walls were more effective in protecting against cannon attacks. With the development of artillery, the star-shaped fortification replaced the traditional medieval fortress.

At the end of the sixteenth century, Fort Bourtange took an active part in the battles against Spain and held off more than one attack. To increase its strength, the fort was improved and strengthened special database times. In 1648, the Eighty Years' War ended and the fort fell into disrepair. However, already in 1665, part in military operations. During this period, the Bishop of Munster unleashed a war against the Westerwolde region. Until 1672, Fort Bourtange protected local residents and withstood a siege.

By the middle of the 18th century, the fort's structures had become obsolete and Bourtange was abandoned again. In 1859, the fortress passed to the local community and peasants settled there. In the 1960s, they decided to restore the fort again, but not as a military structure, but as a significant historical monument.

The reconstruction of Bourtange was carried out between 1967 and 1992. The restored barracks housed museum exhibits, and theatrical combat operations were held on the fort's territory, which many tourists come to see.
Among the curious sights of the resort island of Samui is the Wat Plai Laem Temple, also known as the Temple of the Many-Armed Buddha, located in its northeastern part. Its main shrine is a giant statue of the goddess of mercy and patroness of the weak, Guanyin, which has 18 arms.
