Where can you find the latest in artificial intelligence , smart cities , TV screens or even sex toys? CES – the largest electronics fair in the world – brought together brilliant and bizarre things. Dutch startups were also in the spotlight. In this article I share the most striking trends and gadgets that I saw passing by.
CES is held in Las Vegas every January. Wide ranging, from smart cities to audio and video to… well, almost anything you can imagine, as long as it has something to do with electronics! The show has been around for over 50 years and is, together with IFA and CEBIT, kind of the top three trade shows.
In a way, CES is like a friend's birthday party. You know who's coming and what they're going to say. You might see something new, but it's usually what you expect. Fun to go to, but nothing too spectacular. This is not just my opinion, but also that of fellow journalists and bloggers and the authoritative NY Times .
Still, there are things worth mentioning, at the risk of sounding somewhat familiar. It's also fun to see new products or new versions of products. I'm combining all of these things in an article where I have to skip a lot, simply because there's never enough space to discuss even a few percent. More videos, also from previous years at CES, can be found on my YouTube channel .
2018 CTA Consumer Tech Industry Forcast CES 2018Trends to watch
Traditionally, the Consumer Technology Association ( CTA , the organizer of CES) shares the trends for the coming year. This year, no figures on market size, but more of a look at which trends we can us phone number list expect. Steve Koenig and Lesley Rohrbaugh presented an overview of the trends that we will see in the coming period in 45 minutes. No big surprises, but that is almost impossible: these are trends (and by definition have been around for a long time). What stood out during the presentation?
Ingredient technology
A distinction is made between ingredient technology , technologies that enable other technologies. Such as artificial intelligence and 5G for autonomous driving, among other things. 5G will really deliver an enormous bandwidth (theoretically) that is necessary for data-intensive applications.
Artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be the Haarlem oil for many problems. From automatic image recognition to all kinds of applications in the medical field and (again) autonomous driving. And of course speech as an interface for almost everything. Unfortunately not yet in Dutch (the language is not yet available), but in English / American. Google was omnipresent at CES by the way.
