The FOMO effect ( Fear of Missing Out ) is understood as the fear of being absent or missing something. It can be an experience, a social event, information or an opportunity. This feeling can end up triggering fear of isolation, of leaving the group, loss of self-esteem or unhappiness due to personal circumstances that prevent you from participating in everything.

It was entrepreneur and investor Patrick J. McGinnis who coined the term FOMO in 2004 to describe the apprehension that an individual may feel when he or she knows that he or she is missing out on russia phone data certain information, events or experiences that could improve his or her life. The consequence is fear and a continuous consumption of content on social networks in order to stay up to date with everything that is happening in his or her circle.

Patrick J. McGinnis is now writing books on this topic, giving TED talks around the world and running a successful podcast channel. But psychologists are also facing this discovery as a new psychopathology to be treated, especially among the youngest. This is at least recognized by Laura Marzo GarcĂa, a general health psychologist with a practice in Valencia, who relates this disorder associated with social anxiety with the misuse of social networks.
