On September 12th, the European Parliament approved the directive on copyright in the digital single market . If you haven't heard of it, you might remember how the news was announced: The European Parliament approves a law to control what can be uploaded to video platforms like YouTube. This could endanger freedom of expression, ban memes and be the end of the internet as we know it.

The news is certainly striking when put like this. The problem is that it does not explain what this new directive is, what real consequences it has and the real reason why it is so problematic. The aim of the directive is to protect copyrighted content.
Let's start at the beginning. In retrospect, the directive has good intentions. Its aim is to create common rules for all EU Member States. Without this directive, each state would have different rules for regulating copyrighted content.
