Meta launched the platform on July 6, 2023 in the United States , and the results were immediate: in its first 7 hours of life, Threads accumulated more than 10 million users, and in less than a week, it managed to surpass 100 million . However, the initial excitement faded and, within a month of launch, the number of users fell by 79%.
The social network only arrived in Spain - and in Europe in general - on December 14, after the company modified the application to comply with European legislation, especially the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act, which came into force this year. Here, too, it was a great success: it accumulated 350,000 downloads in its first 3 days and 2.6 million throughout Europe.
At launch, Threads was presented as a conversation-based app that was standalone but interconnected with Instagram , as it links to your Instagram profile.
Its similarity to Twitter is undeniable , replicating its dynamic of text publications with character limits (in this case 500) and other functions, but it is sold as a friendlier alternative. Threads seeks to be a positive space where people can express themselves, moving away from the toxicity that permeates much of Twitter.
Twitter was initially defensive , sending Meta a letter afghanistan number data threatening legal action over its intellectual property rights . Musk's network accuses Zuckerberg's network of hiring former Twitter employees to create Threads, taking advantage of their knowledge of Twitter's secrets and confidential information.
The complaint was unsuccessful, but neither was Threads. While the platform remains strong and seems to have stabilized, it has not managed to overshadow Twitter, at least for now…
…And more, and more…
As time goes by, the new features that are reinvented on social networks are unique and make each application focus on a different theme, covering more and more social aspects every day. Vinted or Wallapop , for example, are social networks that allow the purchase and sale of second-hand clothes and products, putting users in direct contact with each other, without any type of intermediary between them. Others, such as Tinder, Meetic, Grindr or Badoo , focus on contacting users who are looking to hook up.
Of course, there are many more social networks that we have not been able to discuss, but that you have surely used more than once. There are so many and so varied that we would never finish this article (For example: do you know Likee , the Singaporean clone of TikTok?). However, we have highlighted the most popular ones in our country.
Other countries have their own specificities: China, for example, with QZone, Baidu Tieba and Sina Weibo , or Russia, with Odnoklassniki or Vkontakte, have hundreds of millions of users on networks that are completely unknown to us.
