Back in 2019, we were studying how the role of women in digital employment was evolving, and now, once the pandemic has pushed us all towards developing digital skills, we wonder if we have managed to reduce the gender gap in this area.
The situation of digital employment
In the study of the problems that concern digital employment we must differentiate between two issues:
The progressive digitalization of tasks inherent to any job.
Work processes have changed, the Internet has infiltrated all business areas and now, every employee must be familiar with the latest applications in communication, management, administration and in a multitude of operational positions that have introduced new programs and connected devices.
Digital employment has increased.
As a result of this increase, caused by the implementation of this trend to digitalize work in all areas of the economy, growth opportunities have arisen for the sector that provides hardware or software, and for development or digital communication agencies.
The study “Gender indicators of the digital society” by the National Observatory of Technology and Society reviews the process of digital transformation that the Spanish economy is undergoing from the perspective of gender issues, relating it to the situation in other member states of the European Union.
The conclusions of this study indicate that the adaptation to the digital format of many of our daily activities has been carried out equally between men and women. However, the type of activities for the use of digital media and the training inherent to them, continues to mark a clear difference between genders.
Training in STEM disciplines should be encouraged among the female gender to reduce this gap in digital work, since 80% of ICT positions are still occupied by men and the world of care remains female, with the same roles as always surviving, but transferred to the digital world.
The data on frequency of use and digital skills, however, are even, showing even greater female use of devices and applications, which indicates that the evolution has to be positive and that it must involve ad hoc training to cover both positions in the technological sector, and to assume new digitalized functions in companies of any sector by female workers.

How can we turn the situation around?: Technological reskilling
By reskiling we mean professional recycling in which the digitalisation processes of companies are the main focus . It involves developing new skills to adapt to new positions or to new requirements of the current position. The result is that the person is prepared for the challenges that innovation brings us.
The only way to deal with technological reskilling is through training, counting of course on the proactivity and interest of the person. We believe that the technological gap identified around female employment should be gradually reduced, and training in the best ICT courses to gain employability is the best help.
It is important to always keep in mind the skills that companies look for in their employees when hiring them . In this way, we can evaluate our aptitudes, competencies, skills, etc. and refocus them to be successful.
Improve a position towards communication skills
Communication skills have taken centre stage in all departments. Not only externally, but also, due to teleworking, knowing how to communicate internally and being comfortable with video conferencing applications allows any worker to become a potential leader.
In this sense, it is advisable to have advanced digital skills , which are useful for any sector and job, and are essential today. If you also work in the marketing or commerce sector, developing in electronic commerce will facilitate access to new positions, oriented towards online sales, which all companies are developing or will have to do in the future.
Likewise, having well-designed profiles, without personal references and highlighting the professional figure on the main social networks will help workers to be considered brand advocates, which adds a plus of reliability to a CV that is committed to digitalization. In this sense, knowing how to manage a virtual Community can also allow us to not only position the best professionals with their experience, but also to fill specific positions in communication departments such as social media or community managers.
One of the most obvious needs of organizations today, related kuwait phone numbers to digital jobs, is computer security. Cybersecurity problems are increasingly present in everyday life and a hacker attack or identity theft problem can create many problems, from financial to legal, in the usual activities of a company.
This is why security planning and cybersecurity, both in offices and in the current teleworking environment, are areas that need to be improved, in which female digital employment has a gap that could lead to better positions.
Encourage a job change
Current job offers have a clear technological component, so if what you are looking for is a radical change, more extensive training is recommended in order to become an expert in specific areas that digitalize basic knowledge. For example, retraining of offline marketing specialists towards digital marketing or project management experts towards the use of agile methodologies is common.
Ultimately, what we propose is the power of training as a basis for improving the position of women in digital employment and being able to achieve effective equality in the performance of new skills and prevent the salary and digital gap between genders from growing.
