Setting up a Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property – Checklist
Posted: Sat Feb 01, 2025 3:56 am
You don't have a Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property yet and your Universal Analytics (UA) property has been deactivated? Don't worry, we'll help you!
If you want to learn more about GA4 and its differences to the previous version Universal Analytics (UA): Read our article on Google Analytics 4 now !
Google may have already created a GA4 based on your or each UA property (if you have not previously deactivated the automatic creation of a GA4 ). A red message will then appear at the top of your GA4 property. This may have worked based on the gtag - but it doesn't necessarily have to. Feel free to send us your data. Otherwise, we recommend our checklist to set up the GA4 yourself.
If you want to get started right away, go through the following Google Analytics 4 checklist to set up a GA4 property.

Under the menu item Administration in the UA ecuador mobile numbers list you call up the wizard for setting up a GA4 property.

Select “I want to create a new Google Analytics 4 property” and click “Start now”.
The setup wizard now creates a GA4 property in addition to the original UA property (which is not deleted).
Only basic settings from the UA property are adopted. Further settings must be made individually in GA4 later.
Optimized analytics are activated that automatically record events in GA4, such as page views, scrolls (90%), clicks (on external links), file downloads and video views. Read here which events are automatically recorded in GA4.

The following message appears: “ Personally identifiable information must not be forwarded to Google. ”
This means that you need a Consent Management Platform (CMP)/Cookie Tool for GA4. Without a CMP/Cookie Tool, you are not allowed to collect any user data (neither via the gtag nor via the Google Tag Manager or other tracking tools) in Google Analytics! Google Analytics is not automatically compliant with data protection regulations - if you violate these rules, you will face very high fines!
Yes, I have a CMP/Cookie Tool and it is correctly connected to the tracking.

The note also appears: “ Set up a website tag to have the activity on your website analyzed. ”
Now an important question: Do you want to use gtag.js (Google Tag) or would you rather use Google Tag Manager?
We recommend gtag.js for very simple tracking of a page, page views and automatic events. For gtag.js, everything is built directly into the source code. We recommend Google Tag Manager for all customers who want to track more than just automatic events and do not want to code each individual event into the source code. We also clearly recommend Google Tag Manager for central administration of consent management / cookie connections. Do you need consent management advice ? Our experts are also available for this and will show you everything you need to know about CMP.

I only need basic tracking with the automatically measured events and have chosen the Google Tag (gtag.js) (skip this point if you use the Tag Manager):
Now comes the call to set up the Google Tag (gtag.js), because the gtag is NOT AUTOMATICALLY on your website and must be stored in the source code of the website ! (So you don't just press a magic button and everything is ready - that would be nice).
