CHARACTERISTICS: A member of the Vesiculovirus type, in the family Rhabdoviridae(3,6). VSV is a bullet-shaped, enveloped virus, approximately 70 nm in diameter and 170 nm in length(3), and has a negative-sense, single-stranded RNA genome(5,8). VSV has two main serotypes: the VSV Indiana serotype (with its subtypes Cocal virus and Alagoas virus), and the VSV New Jersey serotype(1,2,3,5,6,8).
